Marine low trophic aquaculture

In Norwegian fjords we cultivate a low trophic marine filter- feeder, the tunicate Ciona intestinalis.

Tunicates are the only known animal group that can synthesize cellulose. This cellulose has high mechanical strength, the highest crystallinity found in nature (89%) and is isolated to high purity (>99% glucose). These properties make TUNICELL very well suited for applications in 3D tissue models and regenerative medicine.

Based on over 20 years of research, our team has developed the complete value chain from farming tunicates, to harvesting, processing, cellulose extraction and further refining of the tunicate cellulose to cellulose nanofibrils with tuneable properties.
